Sheila Meyer: Honored by Cancer Center for Kids

Sheila Meyer, owner of Meyer Chevrolet, in Middle Village, Queens, takes community involvement seriously. Besides heading up the oldest Chevrolet dealership in New York State, Sheila served as Chairman of the Board for GNYADA from 2006 through 2008. But, that’s just a beginning for this go-getter.

In the last few years, Sheila raised $10,000 for the Boy Scouts of America summer camp program. Last year she was named person of the year by Boy Scouts of America Greater New York Councils.

On April 25, Sheila will be honored at the Annual Black and White Ball for Winthrop-University Hospital’s Cancer Center for Kids. Her gift to the event, a 2009 Chevy Malibu Hybrid, is slated for the Grand Raffle Prize. 100% of donations go to the Cancer Center for Kids.

Sheila’s involvement with the Cancer Center for Kids started a couple of years ago, when she was looking for a charity to donate to. “I am one of five children, we are very close and all from the midwest,” she explained. “We agreed that instead of doing the normal Christmas gift exchange, we’d give to a charity.”

Sheila found her cause after a friend invited her to visit the Cancer Center for Kids in Mineola, New York. “I was blown away,” she said. ”The clinic was such a wonderful nurturing environment. It was like walking in to Walt Disney World!”

She explained, “It’s an exceptional facility where children are getting superior medical care along with unconditional love and support. They give children and families service and resources for as long as they need it.”

Sheila believes that despite the auto industry’s current challenges, this is a time to give back even more. “I’m privileged to be involved with the Cancer Center for Kids, and the amazing work it does on behalf of children with cancer and their families. Despite the highly publicized troubles of American car dealers, I truly believe that hard times like these represent an opportunity for all of us to see where help is needed, and step up to the plate. We have to reach out to those whose day-to-day lives are tougher than our own.”
